Following Up After Applying for a Job
Submitting a job application is an important step — but it is not the last one. Following up after applying demonstrates initiative, genuine interest, and the kind of professional persistence that employers often value highly. Done well, it can meaningfully strengthen your candidacy.
Wait an Appropriate Amount of Time
Before following up, give the employer sufficient time to begin reviewing applications. If a timeline is provided in the job advertisement, wait until after that period has passed. If no timeline is given, a follow-up after one to two weeks is generally appropriate.
Use Email as Your Primary Channel
Unless the application specifically directed you to follow up by phone, email is the most professional and least intrusive channel for a follow-up. Address your email to the hiring manager or HR contact named in the advertisement, if possible.
Keep Your Follow-Up Brief and Professional
Your follow-up email should be short and purposeful. Confirm that you submitted an application for the role, briefly reiterate your interest and the reason you believe you are a strong fit, and politely inquire about the status of the process. Do not resubmit your application or repeat your entire professional history.
Express Genuine Enthusiasm
A follow-up that reads as formulaic or perfunctory adds little value. Express genuine enthusiasm for the role and the organisation, and demonstrate that your interest is specific and informed.
Be Gracious If the Response Is Negative
If you receive a rejection in response to your follow-up, thank the employer for their time and express your continued interest in future opportunities. How you handle rejection says as much about your professionalism as how you handle success.
A thoughtful follow-up after an application is a small investment that can make a meaningful difference. Use it as another opportunity to demonstrate your professionalism and genuine interest.
